In a process for producing solid, neutral or basic metal soaps by controlled solid-liquid reaction of liquid fatty acids, possibly admixed with suitable diluents, and solid metal oxides and/or metal hydroxides in an external pre-mixing zone under reduced pressure, the paste-like reaction product is recycled to the reactor by an intensive mixer and the water of neutralization is continuously entrained from the reactor chamber in the gaseous phase.
