The fundamental application of the apparatus is in the classification, based on evaluation of roughness, of surfaces of objects in turbid waters or areas of marine, lake or river bottom. The acoustic devices, designed to operate under conditions which are prohibitive to optical devices, in the current state of the art provide estimates of scant reliability in presence of strong turbidity or strong turbulence. The acoustic device which is the subject of the present invention, being based on the innovative principle described hereafter, is able to provide more reliable estimates of roughness than those obtainable by the other existing systems. <IMAGE> |
