Device making it possible to improve efficiency at light load, of a catalytic converter 12 mounted in the exhaust pipe 11 of a diesel engine which is supercharged by a turbocompressor 4. It includes a valve 14 mounted in a bypass pipe 13 allowing the exhaust gases to be recycled (regenerated) and a flap 15 placed in the inlet port 9. The valve 14 and the flap 15 are associated with a control means including a sensor 17 sensing the pressure at the outlet of the compressor 6 and a device 19 for measuring the speed of the engine, capable at the same time of causing the discharge valve to open and the flap 15 to close when the pressure at the outlet of the compressor is below a predetermined value and the speed of the engine is above a value which is also predetermined.
