Protective coating for an article made of titanium alloy, characterised in that it consists of a metal matrix made of titanium alloy comprising, on the one hand, particles of titanium carbide with a particle size smaller than 50 microns and preferably between 10 and 30 microns and in a concentration of between 10 and 80 % by weight and, on the other hand, a very fine secondary system of titanium carbide precipitates. Process for depositing a coating (4) on the surface of an article (2) made of titanium alloy, characterised in that a mixture of powders consisting, on the one hand, of titanium alloy which has a particle size between 30 and 150 microns and, on the other hand, of titanium carbide of particle size smaller than 50 microns and preferably between 10 and 30 microns, and in a concentration of between 10 and 70 % by weight, is deposited on the surface, while the surface and the mixture of powders are heated by employing a source of heat with a high density of energy, such as a laser beam, and then cooled to form a metal matrix coating the article (1). The coating (4) obtained exhibits a good level of resistance to damage (wear, fretting, erosion) while having good ductility, tenacity and corrosion-resistance properties. <IMAGE>
