摘要 PURPOSE:To execute the display of a high contrast extending over a wide temperature range, and also, to thin the display element, and to widen the visual field angle by specifying a ratio of retardation of a compensator and retardation of a liquid crystal layer at a room temperature. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal layer 15 is formed by filling a space formed by both substrates 11, 21 and an outside peripheral seal 14 with a liquid crystal, and a liquid crystal cell 16 is formed. Also, between the liquid crystal cell 16 and a polarizing plate 27, a compensator 30 having a liquid crystal high polymer layer 35 as a main function component is placed. Also, a ratio RC/RL of retardation RC of the compensator 30 and retardation RL of the liquid crystal layer 15 is set to 0.7 - 0.95. In such a way, even at a high temperature of >=40 deg.C, the contrast does not deteriorate, and also, the display element can be made thin, and simultaneously, light in weight, and moreover, since the liquid crystal high polymer layer subjected to torsion orientation is used as the compensator 30, the visual angle is widened and the contrast is enhanced.
