In equipment for spreading a folded non-woven filter-block to a block length adapted to a box-like plastics housing which is produced by injection moulding about the filter block, the novelty is that a blade-like ram (6) reciprocates into the folds (5) of the filter material (2) to press successive fold peaks (7) down into the V-grooves (8) of a ribbed filter material holder (9). The holder (9) has a length corresponding to the desired block length and advances in synchronism with the ram stroke. The equipment pref. has a control for reducing the ram reciprocation rate at the start and/or the end of the spreading operation. An inclined surface (10) is pref. located, immediately after the ram (6), or a press-down device (11) which presses the filter material (2) fully into the grooves of the holder (9). USE/ADVANTAGE - The filter block is useful in filter cassettes for cleaning breathing air in automobiles and the like. The equipment automates the usual time-consuming and monotonous spreading operation.
