Unit for conducting the beginning of esp. rolled metal strip from a supply coil to a strip processing installation has the novelty that the strip mounting carriage (1) is movable longitudinally in a guide assembly (2,6) whereby the carriage and guide assembly are located on a swivable table (3). The side of the carriage (1) facing the coil (9) has a two-pronged chisel (4) used to lift the beginning of the strip from the coil and to clamp it hydraulically or magnetically. The guide assembly has a stationary component (6) which is positioned centrally in relation to the line of the strip before the mounting drive (7) of the strip processing installation.
