A dispenser comprises an outer casing holding tablets randomly, and an inner member slidable from non-dispensing to dispensing position and to which tablets are transferred to form a single layer in a chamber from which they pass to a dispensing passageway holding a single column of tablets. A controller fixed w.r.t. the casing retains the lowermost tablet in the passageway with the member in non-dispensing position, and in the dispensing position forms a gate passing the lowermost tablet into a predispensing chamber. A retainer holds or releases the tablet in the chamber in the non-dispensing and dispensing positions. The member pref. has a generally triangular chamber at the lower end of a sloping ramp surface.
