The screw head comprises a holder (12) secured on a rotatable and reciprocating spindle (11), a pressure chamber (32) formed in the spindle (11), and a piston (27) operative in the cylinder. The pressure chamber in the spindle is bounded on one side by piston, the piston having a conical section (24) and a cylindrical section forming a piston rod (28). A number of equally spaced levers (18) are pivotally disposed within the holder, with each of the levers including a jaw (20) integral with it and a device for moving one end (22) of each of the levers radially toward one another so that they rest upon the conical section of the piston which in a first position of rest, the jaws are spread apart for receiving a screw cap closure (1). A fluid pressure is applied to pressure chamber to axially move the piston and the conical section against the upper end of the lever to force the jaws to a second position which tightly holds the cap for screwing onto a container (2). The pressure is controlled by an electromagnetically actuated switch valve (36).
