The invention relates to a vehicle seat belt system and an improved belt for the system which reduces loads in a spring tensioner for the retraction element spindle used to rewind the belt. Loads can also be reduced on a motor which powers the sliding track components of passive seat belt systems. The belt consists of a component mfd. by extrusion of a lightweight plastic with specified minimum width, breaking strength and modulus and rectangular cross-section which moves easily through the belt guidance components. USE/ADVANTAGE - The belt can be used in both active and passive seat belt systems for vehicles, reduces loads on the tensioning spring in active systems and loads on the motor in passive systems, thus reducing component cost and weight.
