(A) Cleaning of ceramic gas filter elements to remove soot particles is carried out by irradiating the filter elements with microwaves. (B) A waste gas cleaning device has a housing contg. one or more ceramic filter elements (16) and one or more microwave radiation sources (20). (C) Use of the cleaning device (B) for regenerating soot-laden filter elements is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The microwaves are used esp. for cleaning diesel engine exhaust gas soot filters. The soot particles are rapidly heated to their combustion temp. without the ceramic being heated and cleaning can be carried out during running of the engine.
