An object as an image information source to be transmitted is disposed on the transmitting side. The two-dimensional image of the object is optically formed at the transmitting end of a light transmission path and is directly transmitted to the receiving side. The light transmission path is typically constituted by a multimode optical fiber, in which phase distortion occurs during transmission. For this reason, the two-dimensional image arriving at the receiving side cannot be used as it is. On the receiving side, accordingly, phase distortion is compensated when the two-dimensional image is reproduced. More specifically, information about a light source which intermittently irradiates the object during transmission of the two-dimensional image is transmitted from the transmitting side as a reference light. On the receiving side, a phase conjugate wave is generated in either the reference light or the two-dimensional image which are obtained from the light transmission path, to mix together the reference light and the two-dimensional image, thereby compensating the phase distortion. |
