The detection of radioactive contamination on an object, such as a wipe, is simulated by the detection of an active substance, on said object, which emits electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength in the range of from 1mm to 100nm. This simulation may be used in a method of training personnel to detect the presence of radioactive contamination and to decontaminate the contaminated environment without the personnel being exposed to radioactive substances. Existing apparatus which makes use of scintillation screens to detect the presence of radioactive materials can be easily modified for use in the training method. <IMAGE>
