A method for preparing hydroxy aromatic carboxylic acids, or the ester derivatives thereof, comprises the carbonylation of a hydroxy aromatic bromide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a transition element of group VIII of the Periodic Table on a carbon support, at a pH of above 8, in the absence of any promoter.The reaction is carried out at a temperature in the range of between 140<o>C to 200<o>C. The resulting products are obtained in high yields and of high purity. The method has particular applicability to the manufacture of 6-carboxy-2-naphthol and 4-hydroxy-4'-carboxy-biphenyl.
