The invention relates to an optical transmission method and system. At a transmitting end (1) the system comprises means (4) for electrically combining signals (F, fj) of at least two different electric transmission systems; and an optical transmitter (LD) for converting the combined signal into optical form and transmitting it over a fibre-optical transmission medium (5) to a receiving end (8). At the receiving end (8), the system comprises an optical passive branching device (9) for dividing the received optical signal to at least two separate optical receivers (12, 13) for separately detecting the signals (F, fj) of the different systems.
