PURPOSE:To control the reactivity of silicon nitride-based fibers for reinforcement with a matrix and the adhesive property of the fibers to the matrix and to produce a desired composite effect by forming inorg. coatings having a specified compsn. on the surfaces of the fibers having a specified compsn. CONSTITUTION:When a ceramic-contg. matrix is reinforced with silicon nitride- based fibers contg. N and Si as essential components and O, C, H and metals (M) as optional components in such atomic ratios as N/Si=0.05-3, O/Si<=15, C/Si<=7 and M/Si<=5, inorg. coatings of a compd. selected among the carbides, nitrides, borides, silicides and oxides of C and groups IIA-VIIA, VIII, IIIB and IVB metallic elements or a combination of such compds. are formed on the surfaces of the fibers. The resulting inorg. fiber reinforced ceramic composite material has high tensile strength, a high modulus of elasticity, superior heat and wear resistances. |
