The present invention is intended to provide a means of protection to be used by healthcare personnel when carrying out aspiration of the upper and lower airways. This aspiration, which is performed using a catheter inserted into the patient's airways either via the trachea, nose or mouth, generally causes the patient severe attacks of coughing. To ensure that the secretions, mucus, blood, etc., coughed up by the patient do not hit the operator or other healthcare personnel, a protective means in the shape of a cup 1 is placed over the patient's nose, mouth or tracheotomy. The cup 1 is made of transparent material and has two opposite sides 2 and 3 which are cut with curves to permit a better fit to the face and throat. In the base of the cup 1 there is a hole 4 through which a catheter is intended to be introduced.
