[Class 64 (iii).] A plate heat exchanger, more particularly intended for heating furnace air by waste gases, consists of corrugated metal plates the corrugations of adjacent plates making an angle with each other and the heat exchange media passing through alternate spaces between plates. The crests of the corrugations of adjacent plates may be in contact. Waste gases flow up the flue A and air flows at right-angles through the passage B, the corrugations of half the plates being parallel to the direction of flue A and the corrugations of alternate plates being at rightangles. The gases and the air flow through alternate passages produced by the plates and strips K, H, strips K forming with the plates passages for the gases and strips H forming passages for the air. Each of these strips will cut one plate in a direction normal to its corrugations and this edge will be serrated, while the other edge cuts the other plate in a direction parallel to its corrugations and this edge is consequently straight. Thus the strips may be formed by bending over the edge of the plate the corrugations of which are parallel to the strip, and, after serrating this edge, welding it to the edge of the other plate. The apparatus may be made in sections with straight connecting flanges P by dividing it at points where the side strips join the plates in a straight edge. |
