PURPOSE:To precisely move a focus lens to a focusing position in a short time by controlling the speed of the focus lens low when a focus evaluation value corresponding to a high area component gets large and reversely high when the focus evaluation value gets small. CONSTITUTION:A BPF 1 extracts a specified frequency band component from a luminance signal Y obtained from an image pickup element. A BPF 2 extracts the signal of a frequency band component higher than that of the BPF 1. In a focusing area, absolute value data obtained from the frequency band component extracted by the BPF 1 and absolute value data obtained from the frequency band component extracted by the BPF 2 are respectively and separately inputted to integration circuits 30 and 31. According to the focus evaluation values of the two frequency bands to be obtained from the integration circuits 30 and 31, a CPU 20 decides the operational speed of a focus motor. Thus, the moving speed of the focus lens is changed in three ways at least according to changes in the focus evaluation values of the two frequency bands. |
