PRODUCTION OF RED PIGMENT

PURPOSE:To enable practical mass-production of a red pigment by culturing actinomycetes in a medium containing the root of a plant of family Solanaceae or culturing actinomycetes in a culture liquid produced by removing root from a culture product obtained by the culture of the root of a plant of family Solanaceae. CONSTITUTION:Root of a plant of family Solanaceae (e.g. datura) is cultured and proliferated in a liquid medium such as Murashige-Skoog medium. The cultured product is inoculated with Nocardiopsis.sp.BL-1 (FERM BP-2832) which is an actinomycete belonging to genus Nocardiopsis and separated from the root of Atropa belladonna. As an alternative method, exclusively the culture liquid is recovered from the culture product of the root and the actinomycete is inoculated to the liquid or the liquid is made to contact with immobilized actinomycete. The actinomycete is cultured in a medium such as Murashige- Skoog medium to produce a red pigment. The pigment is adsorbed by passing the recovered medium through an adsorbent and the adsorbed pigment is eluted with a solvent. The red pigment can be remarkably produced in the cultured product without necessitating the recovery, disintegration and purification of the root and the actinomycete.
