PURPOSE:To obtain at low cost in high purity and yield the title compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing high-grade perfume components and medicines by depolymerization of a linear polyester in the presence of an organic acid salt of zinc. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, a omega-hydroxyfatty acid of formula HO(CH2)nCOOH is heated at 180 deg.C under normal pressure into a linear polyester. Thence, this polyester is depolymerized at 180-320 deg.C using as catalyst 0.1-50wt.%, based on the polyester, of an organic acid salt of zinc (e.g. zinc acetate) to effect ring closure, thus obtaining the objective compound of the formula (n is 11-17). Said organic acid salt has several advantages (e.g. inexpensive, easy to handle, excellent in catalytic activity, having long working life). |
