This invention is a method for forming colored pattern on an Al or Al alloy without utilizing dyes and pigments. The masking film of wood grain shape is formed on Al or Al alloy article by dipping article in a bath containing alkyd resin or acryl resin. To etch the other areas which don't form the masking film the surface of article is controlled by the application of alkali solution and the masking film is removed, then Al or Al alloy article is electrolyzed to form the colored pattern.
