PURPOSE:To improve the catalyst utilization factor and improve the electrode performance by mixing carbon serving as a carrier, a binder, and tetrafluoroethylene serving as a water repellent agent, then carrying platinum serving as a catalyst metal on this mixture when manufacturing an electrode catalyst layer. CONSTITUTION:Carbon serving as a carrier, a binder, and tetrafluoroethylene serving as a water repellent agent are mixed, carbon black with a high specific surface area is used for the carrier, for example, only this carrier is immersed in water, a proper quantity of the dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is added, and they are mixed to manufacture flock. A platinum chloride acid aqueous solution, for example, is added as a catalyst metal to the flock and paste, and a reducing agent is added to carry platinum. Platinum serving as the catalyst is carried only on the hydrophilic portion of the PTFE-carrying carbon black. The catalyst utilization factor of platinum is improved, and the electrode performance can be improved. |
