This method consists in emitting a series of light pulses (2) in a defined volume (A) of the atmosphere to be observed, in collecting the light signals (3) scattered by the hydrometeors present in this volume, in processing the signals collected in order to determine therefrom the mean intensity and the variance for the series of pulses in question, in comparing this pair of parameters with reference pairs corresponding to identified hydrometeors and in deducing therefrom the nature of the hydrometeor observed. <IMAGE>
