Control device for a buffer memory which implements a method of replacing data which are present when the data sought are not found in the buffer memory. The latter is organised into a class of E memory elements shared over E paths and each furnished with a key. The replacing of the data is effected in one of the memory elements selected by a path index C contained in a pointer. When a success is detected, a validation unit (20) compares the path index INV relating to the memory element achieving the success with the said path index C and then loads into the said pointer (40) the value following the path index INV in an ordered sequence of path indices when the path index INV is one of the successors of the path index C in the said sequence, and preserves the path index C in the contrary case. The invention also relates to a method of managing data. The invention applies to computer systems containing a hierarchised memory and/or a virtual memory. <IMAGE>
