In a coupling mechanism for a tractor trailer combination, a jackknife prevention device consisting of: a main plate (3) which is free to rotate about the king pin (8) and held in position by a snap ring (11) and a washer (5), a coupling wedge (4) which transmits the torque exerted by the fifth wheel to the mainplate (3) and is attached firmly to the underside of the mainplate (3), a mainplate (3) which acts as a sheave wheel, cables (6) which operate a hydraulic cylinder (7), a set of grooved pulleys (10) reducing the amount of travel required by the hydraulic cylinder (7), two fluid velocity sensing lock-up valves (1) and a shut off valve (2) which allows the hydraulic fluid to by-pass the two fluid velocity sensing lock-up valves (1). |
