A supported catalyst containing copper and alkali metal ions on a ring-shaped support of adsorbent material is defined by the dimensions of the support and the porosity of the ready-prepared catalyst in that, the total pore volume thereof is 0.6-1.0 ml/g, pores having a diameter of less than 4 nm are absent, pores having a diameter of 8-20 nm occupy at least 80% of the total pore volume and the remainder comprises macropores having a diameter of greater than 20 nm. The catalyst is suitable for the preparation of 1,2-dichloroethane by oxychlorination of ethylene.
