The tightening mechanism is for a car roof whose longitudinal edges form loops through which pass ropes between a front transverse frame member and a hinged roof support. The pull rope (13) is attached at one end (20) to a tensile spring (21), coacting at the other one (30) with a spring-loaded lever (31). With the roof (1) in the shut position (A), a pressure pin (35) on the lever bears against the free end of a longitudinal lateral roof beam (7), pulling the spring taut via the rope. Pref. the tensile spring is fitted at the roof end (20), facing the transverse frame member (6).
