PURPOSE:To obtain basic calcium sulfonate with an improved acid-neutralizing property and a higher transparency by subjecting a mixture of an oil-soluble sulfonic acid (its Ca salt), a prescribed amount of Ca(OH)2 or CaO, mineral oil, a hydrocarbon solvent, a chloride of alkali (or alkaline earth) metal and water to a specific treatment. CONSTITUTION:An oil-soluble sulfonic acid (its Ca salt) (e.g. oil-soluble calcium sulfonate), Ca(OH)2 or CaO that can react with this acid, mineral oil, a hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. benzene), a chloride of alkali (or alkaline earth) metal (e.g. CaCl2) and water are mixed. Ca(OH)2 or CaO is employed in an amount exceeding the stoichiometrical amount. This mixture is heated to remove water therefrom, followed by filtration to separate insolubles from a filtrate that contains basic calcium sulfonate. Volatiles are then removed from the filtrate to obtain basic calcium sulfonate with a higher transparency (turbidity:10% or less). |
