Used banknotes are sorted and tested according to a number of different criteria and those notes considered unfit for fruther circulation are destroyed. The machine (50) for destroying the banknotes has two rotors (51,52) mounted side by side on parallel shafts. Each rotor consists of a number of sharp edged discs mounted side by side on a common shaft with a space between adjacent discs slightly greater than the disc thickness. The discs of one rotor fit between the discs of the other rotor. Each disc has sharp edged indentationsin its periphery.
