<p>The present invention is directed to an aqueous emulsion acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive composition that excels in high performance applications. The inventive adhesive composition comprises in water (a) a copolymer of a C4-C18 alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and between about 0.1 % and 5 % N-substituted or unsubstituted (poly)acrylamide; (b) a copolymer of a C4-C18 alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and between about 0.2 % and 10 % of an ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acid; and (c) a surfactant, which preferably comprises between about 0.01 % and 10 % by dry weight of said copolymers of a phosphate ester surfactant. Said copolymers (a) and (b) are selected from: (i) a blend of copolymers (a) and (b), at least one of which is an emulsion copolymer; (ii) an interpolymer of copolymers (a) and (b) where said alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer of copolymers (a) and (b) are the same; and (iii) an interpenetrating polymer network of copolymers (a) and (b). Advantageously, the ratio of acrylamide to unsaturated acid in the copolymer ranges from about 1:10 to 10:1 by weight. Advantageously, the emulsion copolymer(s) includes up to 25 % by weight of styrene or other aromatic monomer(s).</p> |
