Binder-free hot briquette, designed for smelting, is produced from finely-divided non-pyrophoric residual materials (I) contg. no combustible components. The materials are produced during the prodn. and processing of iron and steel. The improvement is that a) fuel in finely-divided form is blended with (I); b) to the mixt. of (I) and fuel, there is added sufficient sensible heat from the exterior that the fuel ignites. Sufficient fuel is then added so that the temp. of (I) reaches 600-900 deg. C; and c) (I) are then directly hot-briquetted at a temp. in the given range, without intermediate cooling.
