To join two belt ends together, of one or more belts with at least one fitted with an insert covered by the belt material, the insert (10) at least at one belt end (12, 13) is partially exposed by removing a cross section of the covering material (11). Pref. the cross section of the covering material is removed only where it passes round the insert so that the insert is exposed while the outer dimensions of the covering are unaffected, to give a smooth outer surface at the ends of the belt. Before the insert is exposed by partial removal of the covering material, the ends are cut across their longitudinal axis to give butts for bonding where the end of the ensert and the covering material are on the same vertical plane. Alternatively, the insert material at one or both of the belt ends projects slightly beyond the vertically cut end face of each belt end. End of the insert is exposed by a ring groove formed round it within the covering material in one or both belt ends directly at the insert material, developed by machining particularly by turning, stamping or melting. Single-strand insert material is opened out in the ring groove area, pref. by untwisting at its end or the ends of strands or woven materials which have been braided together. When the belt ends are brought together, they are heated sufficiently for the covering material to melt and pref. fill the ring groove zone. ADVANTAGE - Method gives a strong bond at the joint between the ends of the belt, without build-up of welding or other bonding material. |
