IMPROVEMENTS IN EMBANKMENT REINFORCING STRUCTURES

This invention relates to improvements in the control and stabilization of earthen or soil embankments comprising a gravity facing wall (10) tied to and anchored by a grid or mesh (60) extending into the embankment. The gravity facing wall (10) is comprised of facing wall units or blocks (12) stacked in overlapping horizontal courses. In particular an improved facing wall unit or block (12) is provided featuring a projection formation (26) extending longitudinally of the block (12) in the upper surface (14) and, in the lower surface (16), an offset recess (34) of matching extent and configuration to the projection formation (26). The projection formation (26) further includes grid or mesh engaging projections (30, 92) which penetrate the mesh or grid (60) when registered thereover. A further recess or depression (32) is also included in the upper surface (14) of the facing wall unit or block (12) and is of such an extent and configuration so as to confine therewithin the grid or mesh engaging projections (30, 92) and the grid or mesh (60) when registered thereover.
