PURPOSE:To recover the ink absorbing capacity of a waste ink absorbing body and prevent the ink leakage therefrom by providing opening parts through which to evaporate waste ink in a covering member for covering the waste ink absorbing body. CONSTITUTION:The inside of a roller 11 for carrying a recording medium 10 is in communication with outside air. A recovery device for recovering the ink discharge function of a recording head 5a is provided on the left side of the roller 11. The recovery device consists of a capping part 7b, a pump unit 7 for making the inner pressure of the capping part 7b negative to suck in the waste ink from a discharge opening surface 5b and send the same to a waste ink pipe 7a and a drive mechanism 6 for moving the capping part 7b forward and rearward and driving the pump unit 7. The waste ink sent into the waste ink pipe 7a by the pump unit 7 is absorbed by a waste ink absorbing body 8. A plurality of opening parts 12a-12n are provided in the peripheral wall of a covering member 12. Since the waste ink is always escaping in vapor from the surface of the waste ink absorbing body exposed in the opening part, the ink absorbing capacity of the waste ink absorbing body 8 is recovered by a portion equivalent to the waste ink being removed by evaporation. |
