PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a fray in the braiding of the base material fiber yarns of a cut part even when a gland packing material is cut by impregnating the base material fiber yarns with paraffin polymer wax containing a specific number of carbon atoms and braiding these yarns to form the string like gland packing material and heat-treating said material. CONSTITUTION:Base material fiber yarns are impregnated with 16 - 70C paraffin type polymer wax and braided to form a string like gland packing material which is, in turn, heat-treated. In this heat treatment, a heating temp. in heat treatment is usually 200 - 350 deg.C and a heating time is usually 1 - 24 hr. When the microcrystalline wax on the surface of the base material fiber yarns is heated to 200 deg.C or higher, the carbonation thereof due to thermal decomposition is generated. When carbide is formed at the parts where two or more base material fiber yarns are in contact with each other, the base material yarns mutually become easy to adhere. Therefore, even when the gland packing mate rial is cut, the so-called 'loose fiber' such that fray is generated in the braiding of the base material fiber yarns of the cut part is not generated and the end surface of the cut part can be formed into a predetermined shape. |
