A system for controlling a clutch has an engine speed sensor (19) for producing an engine speed signal and a controller (20) for controlling the torque of the clutch when starting a vehicle in accordance with the engine speed. An atmospheric pressure sensor (60) is provided for detecting the atmospheric pressure. The torque of the clutch is reduced in accordance with the detected atmospheric pressure at high altitude.
