PURPOSE:To obtain an inorganic fiber having fiber surface modified to have chemical stability in forming a composite with a metal matrix by covering the surface of an inorganic fiber with a metal oxide. CONSTITUTION:An inorganic fiber covered with a metal oxide is produced by dispersing an inorganic fiber (e.g. short fibers of alumina or silicon carbide) in a solution containing magnesium chloride and aluminum chloride, adjusting the solution in alkaline state to slowly deposit the precipitate of a metal hydroxide on the fiber surface, washing the fiber with water and baking the product at a high temperature after drying. Since the surface of the inorganic fiber has excellent stability in forming a composite with a metal matrix, the obtained fiber-reinforced composite material has remarkably improved physical properties. |
