Mfr. of absolute alcohol is carried out in a distillation system comprising two distillation towers and a gas- and liq.-supplying and a gas- and liq.-removing section. The starting low-concn. alcohol, with alcohol and water as the major components, is supplied to the middle part of the first distillation tower. A hydrocarbon cpd. is supplied through the top inlet of the first distillation tower. The first distillation tower is maintained at a temp. and pressure at which the liq. and gaseous states of the hydrocarbon coexist. The ethanol, free of water, and hydrocarbon are taken from the lower exit of the first distillation tower, and this mixt. is introduced into the second tower. The hydrocarbons are removed from the mixt. by stripping in the second distillation tower. The gases from the upper parts of the first and second distillation towers are mixed and pressurised. The resulting heat is utilised as the reboiler heat source of the first distillation tower. The mixt. is then cooled to a liquid from which water is separated. The residual liq. is recycled to the first and the second towers.
