The lubricant is based on an aqueous solution of an acrylamide copolymer. The molecular weight 3-10 non-ionic polymer, or anionic acrylamide-sodium acrylate copolymer (0.01-1 per unit by weight) produced by gamma irradiation and of 2.5 - 7 x 10 power 6 molecular weight (50-90 per cent anionic), is blended with up to 2.5 per cent of corrosion inhibitor. The inhibitor can be sodium polyphosphate, sodium chromate, alkylolamine, boric acid, sodium silicate and/or octadecyl amine.
