PURPOSE:To attain highly efficient optical modulation even by the injection of small power and to extend the service life of the optical modulator by forming the uncontinuous band of equivalent refractive indexes on the center position of an intersecting part with an equal width. CONSTITUTION:The intersecting part 3 is formed by allowing two optical waveguides 1, 2 to intersect with each other at an intersecting angle theta like an X shape. The uncontinuous band 5a of equivalent refractive indexes is formed on the center position of the intersecting part 3 with the equal width. On the intersecting part 3, a groove part 5 with an equal width in the longitudinal direction is formed so as to divide the intersecting angle theta on the intersecting part 3 and a refractive index changing area 4 shown by slashes is formed on either one side of the groove part 5. Consequently, optical modulation can be efficiently executed by a small injection current value, so that the quantity of heat generation can be reduced at the time of optical modulation and the service life of the optical modulator can be secured. |
