Method of inlaying a pattern in a floor or wall covering, such as a carpet. It comprises the following stages: a) the pattern (2) is reproduced in relief on a plastic film (1) b) the face in relief of the said film (1) is covered with an adhesive (3) c) the adhesive (3) is pulled away, taking with it the said pattern (2) on its face which had been in contact with the said film (1) d) the said adhesive (3) is placed on a material to be inlayed arranged on top of the covering, and e) the assembly is cut following the contour of the pattern (2).
