<p>PURPOSE:To easily perform the setting operation of timer recording or the like and to prevent the erroneous operation of cassette priority levels by giving recognition numbers to cassettes in the insertion order. CONSTITUTION:When a first cassette 43 is inserted through a door 29, it is detected by a cassette insertion detector 5 to inform a CPU 13 that the cassette 43 is inserted. The CPU 13 drives a mode motor 21 to move the cassette 43 to a tape driving position C, and it is detected in the position C by a tape driving position detector 11, and the CPU 13 stops the motor 21. Then, recognition number '1' of the cassette 43 is set. When the indication of recording, reproducing, fast-forwarding, or the like is inputted from a mode input switch 1 and the CPU 13 performs the mode processing, a second cassette is inserted and is detected by the detector 5 and is moved to a second holding position E by the motor 21, and recognition number ''2'' is set.
