The viscosity of a substance is measured by placing a coated substrate in a horizontal position. A permanent magnet or electromagnet under the substrate is made to roll by a magetisable ball (1) under the influence of a magnetic field when the substrate moves due to the field gradient of the magnet. The movement is used as the basis for measurement. The ball is maintained in a constant rolling position w.r.t. its rest position. The ball position is determined by a non-contact sensor position which controls the speed of advance of the substrate.
