Water clarifying apparatus 10 has a cylindrical tank 14 where particulate contaminants suspended in raw water are separated using flotation techniques. A set of concentric, mutually spaced, conical plates 24 positioned in the flotation tank 14. The plates 24 rotate about the tank, preferably in unison with a (i) header 17 that distributes equal quantities of raw water to each annular zone in the tank defined by the conical plates and (ii) a scoop 22 for removing the contaminants which form a floated sludge layer. A screw conveyor 68 is located in a discharge pipe 22a of the floated sludge scoop. An infrared sludge detection array 112 in a window 114 in the side wall of the tank 14 senses the sludge-water interface. Air dissolving tubes 32L,32R operating in parallel that have common feeds and discharges coupled through three way valves 82,84,86,88 operated to pressurize a closed volume of water with high pressure air in one tube while reloading and discharging the other tube. 3474m
