HV power circuit breaker with arc extinction system - supplies extinction gas to hollow switch contacts by openings blocked by sliders until given point after switch opening

The HV load switch has two, coaxially aligned hollow contacts (2,3), a given distance apart but selectively bridged via a movable contact piece (4). Each hollow contact has a flow opening (12,14) for the arc extinction gases controlled via a slider (10,13), operated via the movable contact piece so that the flow openings are blocked when the switch is closed. The flow openings are opened upon opening of the switch only after a given delay interval. Pref. the total cross sectional area of the flow openings of each contact is at least one fifth of the flow aperture (17,18) provided by the hollow contact. ADVANTAGE - Pressure of compressed quenching gas increased during circuit breaking through effect of extended arc without changing construction of compression section.
