The bin is used for storing waste material. It is of cylindrical form and has a floor consisting of two hinged flaps. The bin is lifted by a crane with the crane hook engaging a device which grips the upper end (36) of a rod (26) which can slide vertically in a guide (32) in the bin cover (14). The lower end of the rod (36) is connected by chains to the hinged flaps so that when the bin is being lifted by the crane these chains are under tension and hold the flaps closed. When the bin is placed on the ground the rod (34) slides downwards and releases the chain tension. When the bin is subsequently raised from the ground a spring-loaded catch holds the rod (34) in its lower position allowing the flaps to swing downwards and discharge the bin contents.
