Quat. ammonium cpds. of formula (I) are new: (in which R1 = 8-22 C alkyl; R2 = 7-21 C alkyl; R3 = 1-4 C alkyl, -(C2H4O)z-H or -(C2H4O)z-COR2; R4 = 1-4 C alkyl or benzyl; n = 2 or 3; x = 0 or 1 10; y and z = 1 10; and A = Cl0, Br- or R5OSO3- in which R5 = 1-4 C alkyl). (I) are prepd. by esterifying an etheramine (II) with a fatty acid R2-COOH, and quaternising the prod. with an alkyl halide or a dialkyl sulphate or formula R4A.
