Meanwhile, in the state where the major axis (n1) of the liquid crystal film 11 is rotated only by 2thetac with reference to Elambda, at first, the electric field E1 of light passing through the liquid crystal thin film 11 is rotated only by 4thetac with reference to the incident light. Next, the electric field E2 of the light passing through the 1/4 wavelength panel 14 becomes circularly polarized light, and is reflected on a reflection panel 15, and then, made incident on the 1/4 wavelength panel 14 again. The electric field E3 passing through the 1/4 wavelength panel 14 lies in a direction where it is rotated only by -4thetac with reference to one main axis (n4) of the refractive index of the 1/4 wavelength panel 14. Finally, the electric field E4(=E out) of the light passing through the liquid crystal thin film 11 having the liquid crystal molecule major axis (n1) in the direction where it is rotated only by 6thetac with reference to E3 lies in the direction where it is rotated only by 6thetac with reference to the liquid crystal molecule major axis.
