The exhaust feedback arrangement is used in conjunction with a lambda-controlled three-way catalytic converter, enabling the engine to operate in lean-burn mode (with lambda greater than 1) under light loading. The feedback is controlled by a NOx detector. An electronic control program for the engine is selected in accordance with the power demand represented by the position of the accelerator pedal for less than full load.
